Cycling to work
Gonna start cycling in next week - will take half an hour each way. Will save me £60 a month on petrol and I won't have the stress of driving at rush hour amongst mongs. Plus five hours exercise a week is bound to be good for the lungs and ticker. Win win?

Any of you Lycra mob got any tips? Other than avoid small cocked Aussies in XS leather jackets

You're lucky it's an option bruuno. My current workplace doesn't have staff showers so rules out cycling to work (sadly).

When I first traveled (to the Americas) I found that the English had a reputation for not showering.

Re: Cycling to work
Shower if it's a long sweaty commute. If it's relatively short and you're wearing the right gear, you can get away with a wipe down with a pack of wet wipes.

Re: Cycling to work
Don't bother with knobbly tyres. Get ones with kevlar strip, inspect the tread for glass etc weekly (punctures are rarely a sudden thing - they're usually the result of something working its way in) and check tyre pressure weekly - I keep my tyres 5psi below max in decent weather and 10 below when it's shit. It sounds like a massive faff but it's much better doing that than struggling with tyre levers in the pissing rain.

Never used the self sealing gloop - always assumed it was for tubulars??

Re: Cycling to work
I bought a product called "Gloop"for my motorcycle tyres as I was travelling in France a lot and dreaded getting a puncture. Worked a treat. Put some into by bicycle tyres about a year ago and have not had a problem. Cycle on Canal Paths a lot and they can get pretty gritty.
Easy to install and there is some You Tube imfo.
Got mine on Ebay..
Good Luck.

Re: Cycling to work
Get knobby tires, less chance of puncture with them but I don't think they will fit on racing wheels

Re: Cycling to work
Invest in Schwalbe Marathon plus 700 x 25c tyres They are the closest thing to bullet proof in the market

Re: Cycling to work
I'm concerned about the risk of punctures now - surely this only affects those poofy racing bikes with skinny tyres?

Re: Cycling to work
Roundabouts are an absolute nightmare, I actually get off and use the pedestrian crossings to get round some of the more crazy ones, cars don't give a flying fuck about cyclists on roundabouts.

Just assume that everyone's going to try to fucking kill you and you'll be fine.

Car doors opening in front you, happened twice to me on the Fulham Palace Rd. Also had a white Van pull out on me at Mortlake, Flower delivery man, I went over the top of his bonnet broke the toe straps and ended up in a heap on the other side

Re: Cycling to work
Think it was more the annoyance Ron.

He was obsessed with not dropping below a certain speed and fixing 5 punctures in a week put his schedule out.

Not easy fixing a puncture when you haven't got your bucket of water there to find out where the hole it ;o)

He was put off by a few punctures and crashes??

He sounds like a bit of a girl to me.

Re: Cycling to work
A friend of mine used to cycle in to London every day from near Chelsmford, though it didn't last too long because of punctures and crashes.

Would have been amusing if someone had tried to get road rage on him though, as he's an ex-marine and karate 3rd/4th dan and pure muscle.

His wasn't to save money, just because he's a nutter really and can't sit still on a train for an hour.

£7 bibbers here, fine for commuting albeit quite brightly coloured if you are worried about being seen in lycra

Expect the unexpected, ie cars turning left before/ as signalling, pedestrians walking between stuck traffic, just try and foresee potential danger.

Have you got a shower at work?
I wonder how many cunts who wear all that cycle gear to work then don't shower after arriving.
